Capacity Building

Land and natural resource conflicts in Indonesia are always developing and very dynamic. To strengthen the capacity of mediators to face this challenges, CRU works with various partners to develop and implement varius learning activities such as basic mediator training, intermediate mediator training and inviting selected junior mediators to participate in an mediator internship program.

The various capacity building activities developed by CRU will synergistically build a foundation for the creation of a pool of mediators that are geographically spread in Indonesia. The pool of mediators are a key element in the strategy for developing an independent and sustainable conflict resolution institution.

The availability of reliable mediators who can work together with the parties is a prerequisite to build public trust in mediation as an effective and efficient option to resolve land and natural resource conflicts.

Certified Mediation Training

In collaboration with partners providing mediator training, CRU organized several certified mediator trainings. The training targeted representatives of civil society organizations that focus on land and natural resources issues, government officials and businesses that have interest and commitment in resolving land and natural resource conflicts. After attending the training and passing the training with a minimum duration of 40 hours, participants will receive a mediator certificate.

The mediator certificate is issued by the Supreme Court or an institution accredited by the Supreme Court and states that someone has followed and passed a mediation certification training in accordance with applicable policies and provisions.

Intermediate Mediation Training

CRU seeks to create a space for dialogue-learning about the mediation of land and natural resource conflicts through an Intermediate Mediation Training. The create a space for dialogue and learning is part of CRU’s commitment to increasing the capacity of mediators of land and natural resource conflicts in Indonesia. The Intermediate Mediation Training participants are mediators who have been involved in resolving land and natural resource conflicts and have the commitment to develop mediation as an effective and efficient option to resolve land and natural resource conflicts.

The Intermediate Mediation Training process is designed to increase and integrate the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed by mediators in resolving conflicts. Using an adult education approach and group dynamics, the training is designed to provide appropriate space for the diversity of backgrounds and abilities of the participants.

Internship Program

The internship program provides opportunities for junior or beginning mediators of land and natural resource conflicts to get first-hand experience in the conflict resolution process. Interns will join a mediator team in an actual conflict resolution case and participate in the entire process of resolving land and natural resource conflicts facilitated by CRU. To optimize the internship program, the mentees will be guided by CRU’s senior mediator during the process of resolving ongoing land and natural resource conflicts.
